Galaxies. All of it. Entire galaxies, whose light has reached us after a journey of hundreds of millions of years. We are, in some sense, peering into the ancient past when see this photograph. There may be, as some astronomers estimate, over 100 billion galaxies, each with hundreds of trillions of stars, many like our own, and possibly with planetary systems of which we are one particular benefactor. We make love, music, poetry, art, and politics while supernovas explode and entire galaxies collide in utter auditory emptiness. We gather and worship only a short time, while across the universe, at unimaginable distances, decades may have elapsed due to gravitational time dilation. Don’t you understand how extraordinary it is to be anything at all? How thankful we must be!
